An Act of Kindness
Brody Klich, a 13-year-old from Wauconda, a northwest suburb of Chicago, has found a friend for life in Luke Goode, a University of Illinois basketball recruit from Homestead, Indiana. Luke and his parents had driven to Indiana in early May for the annual reunion of the basketball movie classic ‘Hoosiers’ where Brody was looking forward to meeting Luke, his current Hoosiers basketball idol. On the morning of the game, Brody had fallen in the hotel shower and was unconscious following an epileptic seizure. He received emergency treatment at the hotel by paramedics and later at Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
Within a few days Brody received a phone call from his idol, Luke Goode. According to Brody’s mom, her son was blown away by the call from Luke, who told Brody that he should call him if ever he has a need to talk. Brody’s mom said it was like going to Disneyland for Brody to get that call from Luke. She says Brody and Luke have texted a couple of times since then. Brody, who’s into sports of all kinds, plays basketball and baseball, has his own online presence as ‘Brody the Kid,’ and has a weekly YouTube show called ‘The Hobby Show’ in which he interviews guests in the sports card world.
‘We have a total blast,’ Brody said. ‘It’s all about sports cards.’
His mom said that when Brody was as young as 5, he was watching grainy footage of the Milan, Indiana High School state championship basketball game, which inspired the filming of the ‘Hoosiers’ movie classic. ‘I really love the concept of the movie with the underdog team and their championship miracle,’ said Brody.
Luke Goode followed up after the phone call to Brody by sending him an autographed t-shirt of his regular season’s undefeated Homestead High School team. Brody’s mom, Sheri, added that Luke didn’t know Brody, but Luke didn’t care about that. For Luke to track him down and do that, I think it captures the spirit of what Luke is about. It meant a lot to us and it’s something Brody will never forget.’
It’s a safe bet that Broby truly will never forget that act of kindness from Luke Goode and will be keeping a close eye on the Fighting Illini of Illinois during the 2021-2022 basketball season.
